Dave's Rock Garden began in 2015 when local resident Dave Mahr decided to transform a neglected, overgrown dirt lot on a slope in Encinitas. What started as a personal project of clearing weeds and planting succulents quickly blossomed into a beloved community installation. Today, the terraced hillside is packed with thousands of colorful, hand-painted rocks contributed by locals and travelers alike.
Visitors can stroll along the narrow dirt paths winding through the terraces, discovering custom-painted stones featuring everything from cartoon characters to heartfelt memorials. It's an ever-changing outdoor gallery where you are encouraged to stop, reflect, and enjoy the quirky coastal charm. The garden offers a peaceful, meditative atmosphere just blocks from the Pacific Ocean.
Because the garden relies entirely on volunteer love and care, it represents the tight-knit, artistic spirit of Encinitas. It’s a completely free attraction that proves how a simple idea can bring a community together. Make sure to bring your camera to capture the sheer variety of micro-artworks on display.
