Tucked beneath a historic La Jolla gift shop lies California's only sea cave accessible by land. Visitors descend a hand-carved, 144-step tunnel to reach a wooden platform looking out over the roaring Pacific Ocean. The cave's unique opening naturally frames a silhouette that looks remarkably like a vintage cartoon character.

In 1902, German engineer and philosopher Gustav Schulz hired two Chinese laborers to dig a tunnel from his residence down into the sea cave using only picks and shovels. Originally rumored to be used for smuggling bootleg whiskey and undocumented immigrants during Prohibition, the tunnel eventually became a popular tourist attraction.

Today, visitors enter through the Cave Store and walk down a steep, narrow staircase that leads directly into the damp, echoing cave. At the bottom, a viewing platform offers a dramatic look at the ocean swells crashing against the cave walls and a chance to spot local sea lions swimming just outside.

The cave gets its name from Frank Baum, the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, who noted that the rock formation's opening perfectly matches the silhouette of 'Sunny Jim,' a mascot for a popular British cereal brand in the early 20th century.

Heads Up

  • The 144 stairs must be climbed back up to exit, which can be physically demanding.
  • The smell of marine life and sulfur in the cave can sometimes be quite strong.
