World's Largest Chest of Drawers

High Point, North Carolina, has long asserted its dominance as the "Home Furnishings Capital of the World." To solidify this identity in the minds of travelers, the local Chamber of Commerce decided in the mid-1920s to erect a monument that couldn't be ignored: a giant chest of drawers. Standing on North Hamilton Street, this colossal piece of furniture served as both a literal bureau and an information bureau, welcoming visitors to the bustling manufacturing town.

The original 1926 structure was a 20-foot-tall building designed to look like a dresser. However, by the late 20th century, the wooden giant had fallen into disrepair. In 1996, the landmark underwent a massive reconstruction. It was completely rebuilt as a 36-foot-tall, four-drawer Goddard-style block-front chest. The level of detail was significantly upgraded, featuring a rich, dark wood-like finish, brass-style drawer pulls, and intricate molding that mimics fine 18th-century craftsmanship.

Perhaps the most whimsical addition to the reconstructed chest is the pair of giant socks hanging casually from the middle drawer. These colorful, six-foot-long socks were added to pay homage to High Point’s other major historic industry: hosiery manufacturing. This touch transformed a grand, imposing piece of neoclassical-style furniture into a lighthearted roadside photo-op.

Today, the chest sits in a small, landscaped plaza, flanked by office buildings and design showrooms. While you can no longer walk inside it as visitors did in the early days, it remains a beloved symbol of civic pride and a mandatory stop for roadside Americana enthusiasts. Standing at its base, the sheer scale of the piece—with drawers that look large enough to house vehicles—creates a delightfully surreal contrast against the standard suburban streetscape.
