Created in 1974 by the avant-garde art group Ant Farm and funded by eccentric billionaire Stanley Marsh 3, Cadillac Ranch is a monument to the golden age of the American automobile. Ten vintage Cadillacs, representing the evolution of the car's tailfin from 1948 to 1954, were buried nose-first at an angle corresponding to the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Originally located in a nearby wheat field, the installation was moved two miles westward in 1997 to escape encroaching city sprawl. Today, the cars are coated in countless layers of spray paint, constantly changing color and texture as visitors from around the world add their own tags. It serves as a democratic, ever-evolving canvas celebrating American pop culture.
